This is our current collection of carpets from the Taznacht, Ourika, Zemmour tribe. These sturdy carpets are flat weave or mix of flatweave and pile, Occasionally they are embellished with sequins or embroidery with magical motifs to ward off the evil eye. Some are even woven to be reversible, a Moroccan rug merchant in the medina might tell you “it is like having two rugs for the price of one” and the Berber women flip their rugs over for each season. Also posted is our current collection of Bouchourite. Bouchourite carpets are made out of rags. Bouchour is a slang name for ‘cloth’ in Moroccan-Arabic. This style of Moroccan arpet has only recently begun to be appreciated as art.Moroccans say that Bouchourite are the poorest of the poor people’s carpets. Women salvage scraps of cotton, wool, yarn and occasionally even bits of sparkling brocade in order to weave carpets for their home or nomadic tent. This resourceful technique of recycling old cloth and transforming it into traditional Berber carpets is practiced by tribes all over Morocco. Each carpet in this special collection is a colorful work of abstract textile art for the floor or the wall.
